The Attorney General is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Attorney General in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. LSB’s clients include all ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public agencies.
The Revenue & Taxation Group at LSB is seeking to fill a temporary full time Paralegal position in Victoria.
The lawyers in the Revenue & Taxation Group are responsible for appearing on behalf of the provincial government at all levels of court in connection with bankruptcy and insolvency matters, provincial taxation matters, and foreclosure and other collection matters.
The paralegals in the Revenue & Taxation Group fill a critical role in providing services to legal counsel and clients in the preparation and conduct of legal services to Government. They are an integral part of our team environment.
Specific responsibilities will include review of Petitions served on the Province, drafting Responses to Petitions, review of Notices of Application, drafting Application Responses, corresponding with representatives of client ministries, lawyers, paralegals and other support staff.

In addition to having a high level of organizational skills, you possess excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to manage challenging files with competing priorities. You have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to think strategically and creatively.

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience for either the Working Level (Paralegal 18 +10%) or Growth Level 3 - 4 (Paralegal 16+10% & Paralegal 17+10%) as outlined below:
Working Level (Paralegal 18 +10%)
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent plus completion of a Paralegal Certificate or Diploma.
- An advanced legal degree, such as a law degree, may be considered as an equivalent to a Paralegal Certificate or Diploma.
Growth (Level 3-4) (Paralegal 16 step 3 +10% & Paralegal 17 step 3 + 10%)
- Must have completed a minimum of two courses in a Paralegal Certificate or Diploma program.
- Two years of experience working in a legal office environment
PREFERENCES FOR EACH LEVEL:
- Preference may be given to applicants with 1 - 3 years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant. Additional preference may be given to applicants with 3 or more years of such experience.
- Preference may be given to applicants with 1 - 3 years of experience as a civil litigation paralegal or legal assistant. Additional preference may be given to applicants with 3 or more years of such experience.
- Preference may be given to applicants with experience relating to litigation commenced by a Petition to Court.
- Preference may be given to applicants with experience relating to Summation Pro.
- Preference may be given to applicants with experience relating to Legal Files.
