Aviva Trial Lawyers, the in-house legal firm at Aviva Insurance Company of Canada, is expanding.  We are currently seeking a senior litigation assistant for our Calgary office.  As a litigation assistant you will be responsible for supporting one lawyer in the handling of insurance defence (tort) litigation matters.  This is a hybrid position where you will be responsible for various paralegal and assistant tasks as well as the day-to-day file management.

 

Responsibilities:

 

General management of tort litigation practice, including:

  • Drafting and preparation of correspondence and legal documents, including motion documents, pleadings, affidavits of records, pre-trial/mediation memos, document briefs, etc,
  • Ensuring all appropriate pleadings and documents are filed in accordance with the Rules of Court.
  • Compilation of books of authorities/factums
  • Performing legal research, including quantum and liability assessments, depending on experience and interest
  • Preparing and following up with requests for productions and undertakings
  • Summarizing discovery notes, transcripts, economic loss and medical reports
  • Arranging or coordination of investigations/surveillance, independent medical examinations and retention of other experts, including preparing various instruction letters to investigators
  • Dicta-typing; filing; keeping lawyer's calendar updated; and updating internal database
  • Requisitioning cheques
  • Maintaining file organization
  • Booking travel; including flights, cars and hotels as needed
  • Ensure integrity of information in Legal case management system
  • Liaise between counsel, external parties, and claims operations

     

Experience/Skills Required:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of legal assistant and law clerk experience in an insurance defence or personal injury litigation environment
  • Post-secondary accreditation for legal assistant or law clerk, or equivalent experience preferred
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with MS Word and Outlook
  • Proficient in the Rules of Court and Court forms
  • Customer-service oriented with superb communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Attention to detail with a desire to take initiative
  • Able to work independently with minimal direction and as part of a team
  • Mature work ethic and good sense of humor
  • Ability to work or move towards reduced-paper environment
