The Alberta Securities Commission is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Market Regulation division oversees the regulation of capital market participants and intermediaries, including registrants, equities and derivatives marketplaces, clearing agencies and self-regulatory organizations. With a dynamic team of legal, investment and financial professionals, we are involved in leading-edge projects aimed at balancing effective regulation with our stakeholders’ need for innovation and efficient capital markets.

The opportunity:

We are looking to add to our team a securities lawyer who has an interest in fostering intelligent and effective regulatory policies in relation to the regulation of derivatives and, in particular, over-the-counter derivatives.

Key responsibilities include:

· Developing policy in relation to derivatives and serving as both an internal resource and public contact for these matters.
· Contributing legal knowledge and judgement to the teams responsible at the ASC for the oversight of derivatives, derivatives exchanges, clearing agencies and trade repositories. 
· Advising colleagues and executive management on legal issues concerning derivatives as they arise, including providing cross-discipline advice on administrative, regulatory and compliance matters. 
· Serving on committees with colleagues from across Canada that deal with major policy initiatives concerning derivatives. 
· Interacting directly with industry participants in one-on-one meetings, public education sessions and advisory committees. 
· Delivering oral presentations and written memoranda to executive management and Commission Members on key legal and policy issues in relation to derivatives.

The ideal candidate will possess:

· A law degree and membership in good standing (or eligible for membership) with the Law Society of Alberta.
· At least seven years of experience in securities, derivatives or regulatory law.
· A team-orientated and open-minded approach.
· A practical and responsive approach to problem solving and priority management.
