About the role
We are looking for a Legal Counsel to support the Rio Tinto Group in the delivery of high quality, independent and timely legal advice on aspects affecting its various businesses that are of corporate, commercial and operational significance in Canada and other parts of the Rio Tinto Group globally as required.
Reporting to the Chief Legal Counsel - Aluminium, you will:
Provide advice and assistance in managing legal matters and risks facing Rio Tinto and its businesses, which include the legal parameters for strategic business objectives as varying scenarios arise or are considered e.g. new and on-going projects, , changing government regulation, critical incidents and operational issues, acquisitions/divestments, some of which may have a long term impact.
Analyze legal risks including corporate, commercial, regulatory and compliance aspects in a wide range of matters, such as corporate and business law.
Manage external legal resources cost effectively.
Maintain awareness of all material internal business developments and external legal developments which may lead to a need for legal advice.
Provide advice, draft and negotiate a range of agreements, legal documents and manages projects as designated.
Manage claims, litigation, disputes and alternate dispute resolution mechanism, including strategy and directing the work of outside counsels.
Advisory and leading role in Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) matters; such will include an advisory role in environmental permitting and compliance as well as other types of licenses (construction, operations, etc.); providing efficient response to HSE critical and urgent matters; participating to BRT processes.
Liaise, develop and maintain effective working relationships with members of the Rio Tinto Legal team globally and the Rio Tinto business units / corporate functions locally, and promote collaboration and information sharing.
Review and develop template documentation as may be required for repetitive transactions and circumstances.
Assist the business with maintaining the compliance framework and license to operate that enable Rio Tinto to comply with its legal, regulatory and corporate requirements.
To succeed in this role, you will have:
Licensed Attorney, qualified to practice in Canada (preferably in the Province of Quebec)
5-7 years post qualification experience within a major corporation or law firm
Experience in dealing with Commercial contracts and negotiation
Excellent leadership; decision-making and management skills as well as business acuteness
Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, in French and English
Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and collaborate efficiently with all members of the organization, including operations managers and members of the executive committee.
Ability to travel, to various Rio Tinto sites and other locations as required.
