The General Counsel as a Head of the Legal Department will be responsible to manage and oversee all legal and regulatory affairs of Kia Canada Inc.

Responsibilities

  • Advise senior management on legal issues and risk management considerations relating to all aspects of company operations
  • Negotiate, draft and review all contracts entered into by KCI and advise senior management accordingly, including supplier, license, sponsorship, franchise, service and other commercial agreements
  • Represent KCI and manage outside counsel on all litigation and regulatory matters for KCI, including class actions, complex product liability, commercial, employment, franchise, warranty, small claims 
  • Advise on escalated customer issues, intellectual property management, marketing and advertising, PR, regulatory compliance, privacy issues, employment matters, etc.
  • Coordinate with legal teams at affiliate companies 
  • Develop, update and administer corporate policies such as privacy, records retention, internal procedures
  • Maintain corporate records and filings 
  • Represent KCI on government relations issues regarding government policies, regulations, and agreements affecting KCI
  • Stay up to date and advise KCI regarding industry and legal developments 

Skills / Knowledge / Experience / Education Required

  • Undergraduate university degree/experience
  • Professional graduate degree in Law (J.D. or L.L.B.)
  • Licensed member in good standing with a provincial Law Society in Canada
  • Excellent legal and business judgment and analysis
  • Experience in corporate/commercial law in an in-house and/or leading law firm 
  • Litigation management skills, including for class actions, product liability and broad commercial litigation 
  • Proven management and administration skills
  • Strong advocacy and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism
  • Excellent verbal and written skills (English, some French preferred)
  • Automotive industry or in-house experience an asset
