Legal Assistant

We are looking for motivated and positive new members to join our team who thrive on keeping others organized and providing excellent service. You must be able to work independently and ensure that all tasks and requests are completed accurately and in a timely fashion.


As a member of the Law Branch administrative support team, you will:

  • Draft legal documents and prepare and file court forms/documents

  • Manage electronic and physical legal files, including diarizing files and printing correspondence

  • Prepare trial binders, assemble factums/briefs and other information packages

  • Respond to telephone inquiries (internal to the City and from the public)

  • Obtain and prepare meeting agendas and schedule and prepare for meetings

  • Conduct Land Title/Registry searches and register documents at Land Titles

  • Create cheque requisitions and other forms of payment, including necessary follow-up

  • Enter data into various software systems and programs, including transcription from hand-written copies and creating miscellaneous forms, documents, labels, etc

  • Prepare and distribute correspondence

  • Gather and prepare information for reports, audits, and other documents

  • Additional related duties as required

  • Completion of the Legal Assistant Diploma/Certificate program from an approved educational institution

  • 3 years experience working as a Legal Assistant or in a Legal Environment (Civil Litigation is preferred)

  • For those who have not completed a Legal Assistant Diploma, 5 years of relevant work experience will be required

  • Working knowledge of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and Microsoft Office including Word and Excel

  • Experience with electronic document management systems and dictation are assets

  • Ability to provide excellent client service

  • Proficient and accurate typing skills including spelling, grammar, and punctuation

  • Excellent organization and file management skills,ability to work independently and be able to prioritize and manage a large workload with ease

  • Act with discretion and good judgment in regards to confidentiality

  • Ability to assess and balance multiple tasks with different priority levels with a high attention to detail

  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
