Position Summary

Walmart Canada Bank is seeking a General Counsel to support the legal compliance and regulatory requirements for the Bank.   The role will provide subject matter expertise and knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the law, deep knowledge of consumer credit card issuance and general knowledge of the financial services industry and the market.  The incumbent will lead the legal strategy and function and partner with business leaders and stakeholders to anticipate, develop and recommend strategies to reduce risk for the business.

Position Responsibilities


  • Your duties will include:
  • Advising on a wide range of day-to-day regulatory and commercial issues.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex legal agreements and documents.
  • Corporate secretarial duties, including maintenance of corporate records.
  • Assisting in the creation and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Providing legal support on new initiatives and projects.
  • Implementing strategies and processes to proactively address legal and compliance risks for the business.
  • Providing legal support for cross-functional initiatives.
  • Managing external counsel support and delivery of advice as required on an ad hoc basis.
  • Interpreting legislation impacting the business.
  • Educating and training the business regarding legal and compliance risks.

  • The ideal candidate will have 7-10 years of experience providing counsel on credit card. issuance related experience at a financial institution and/or law firm as well as extensive financial services regulatory experience. 
  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario.
  • Membership in good standing in the Law Society of Upper Canada.
  • Knowledge of business and regulatory environment of financial services industry, specifically bank credit card issuance.
