Counsel, Real Estate & Franchising

This position is a key member of the Legal Team supporting the Real Estate and Development team, responsible for supporting and advising the Company on matters arising from Development and Franchising.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Qualifications & Skills:

  • LL.B. or JD and a member in good standing with a provincial or territorial law society
  • 5+ years of experience in commercial real estate and development, with a reputable law firm, in house or as a sole practitioner
  • Experience with franchising is an asset
  • In-depth experience in drafting, reviewing, negotiating and enforcing a high volume of legal agreements
  • Demonstrated client focus, proven relationship building and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work with levels of senior management and provide legal counsel
  • Well-developed problem solving skills, able to provide innovative client focused solutions
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Highly motivated, innovative and efficient with a strong track record of excellence
  • Comfortable working in an open-concept, team environment
  • Related experience in retail or quick service restaurant industries is preferred

Essential Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares, reviews, negotiates and executes high volumes of legal agreements including agreements of purchase and sale, leases and franchising documents, with a strong attention to detail and a view to managing risk while maximizing benefits to the business
  • Advises on legal and business issues/strategies in various areas including real estate, franchising, property management and operations
  • Liaises with outside counsel and internal departments, acting as a valued business partner while advising and adding value to all legal matters
  • Ensures compliance with Company policies and procedures
  • Keeps abreast of pending legislation or regulatory rules impacting the business and communicates as necessary
  • Prepares general correspondence for internal and external stakeholders
  • Special projects as assigned
