General Counsel

Requirement for an Ontario bar-certified lawyer to handle general legal matters for a family-run real estate development and management company.

Duties will include:

  • General legal matters
  • Reviewing joint venture, co-tenancy and shareholder agreements
  • Working with real estate agents to lease commercial, industrial and office spaces, including signing MLS listings and retaining and instructing brokers
  • Negotiating, drafting, finalizing new leases
  • Actively contacting tenants regarding lease extensions and renewals
  • Tenant relations, including acting as the Landlord’s senior representative with respect to any tenant issues
  • Drafting and reviewing written communications to tenants and home purchasers
  • Rent collection (arrears)
  • Review of rent rolls monthly to ensure accuracy; prepare and update monthly vacancy reports
  • Management of internal property managers
  • Liaison duties with external property managers
  • Obtaining information on new development opportunities and co-ordinating aspects of due-diligence on new sites
  • Drafting and reviewing offers and agreements of purchase and sale for new development opportunities
  • Managing the closing process on new purchases
  • Working with and managing with outside counsel on any issues related to new developments, home sales, condominium document creation and registration, and any litigation
  • Managing property tax appeals
  • Drafting and negotiating commercial leases, subleases, amendments and termination agreements
  • Providing legal support on real estate, commercial leasing matters and environmental law
  • Working with and advising business clients directly, as well as providing guidance and practical solutions
