The Insurance Council of British Columbia regulates and licences over 38,000 life and general insurance agents, general insurance salespersons, insurance adjusters, and restricted travel insurance agents.
We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time permanent lawyer to join our legal services team. The incumbent will carry out Council’s disciplinary processes, provide legal advice on investigations and a variety of organizational matters, and support Council's privacy duties.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Review and advise on investigations and license suitability matters in accordance with legislation, rules, and policy.
- Support Review Committees by preparing cases to be presented, providing advice, and preparing reports.
- Draft decisions and orders.
- Represent Council and/or manage external legal counsel before Hearing Committees.
- Manage Council’s participation in Financial Services Tribunal appeals and judicial reviews.
- Respond to Freedom of Information requests.
- Enforce collection of outstanding regulatory fines.
- Provide advice on the Financial Institutions Act, Council Rules, and other relevant legislation.
- Conduct legal research and gather information from various sources including other regulatory bodies.
- Perform other duties as required.
- B. or J.D. with current membership, in good standing, with the Law Society of British Columbia.
- Minimum 3 years of recent litigation experience.
- Ideally, minimum 5 years of experience with administrative law in the capacity of legal counsel within a regulatory body, or within a law firm.
- Strong legal skills and an established sense of integrity.
- Superior communication skills, both oral and written, with attention to detail.
- Self-motivated with demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
- Able to organize large volumes of work and handle competing priorities.
- Experience with insurance and/or financial services is an asset, but not required.
