We are hiring for a Counsel position, and seeking candidates with a broad range of commercial litigation experience to join CIBC’s in-house Canadian Litigation Team. The Team is called upon whenever CIBC or a CIBC company is involved in a legal proceeding in Canada. We take an active role in litigation strategy and management with outside counsel and provide proactive advice to mitigate litigation risk. We also handle some matters in-house.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Legal Advice & Counsel – you provide proactive, responsive and sound litigation advice and management to all Canadian lines of business to assist with the mitigation of legal and reputational risk.  You will be highly responsive and provide strategic legal advice in relation to litigation matters including class actions, regulatory matters and internal investigations.  An ability to speak French is an asset but not required.
  • Court Experience - you have significant litigation experience including conducting examinations for discovery, arguing motions and conducting trials. You have developed strong legal judgment and are comfortable running a matter from start to finish.

You will work closely with your colleagues within the Legal Department and amongst the various internal partner groups within the Bank (lines of business, Communications, Compliance, Risk etc). You will  work closely with outside counsel from an approved counsel list to actively and efficiently manage litigation matters.

Who You Are

  • You can demonstrate experience. You have significant relevant experience gained at a top tier law firm or a major corporation in corporate or commercial law.
  • You’re a certified professional.  You have been called to the Bar in Ontario and are a member in good standing.
  • You give meaning to data. You enjoy investigating complex problems, and making sense of information. You're confident in your ability to communicate detailed information and complex issues in a simple manner and offering practical recommendations.
  • You act like an owner. You thrive when you're empowered to take the lead, go above and beyond, and deliver results.
  • You look beyond the moment. You make decisions and take actions that will make a difference today and tomorrow. You proactively seek new opportunities to define what's possible.
  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and you live our values – trust, teamwork and accountability.
