What You’ll Be Doing

With about 50 lawyers working from offices in Toronto, Montreal, New York, London and Hong Kong, CIBC Legal manages legal outcomes by providing a full range of legal and transactional support services to CIBC’s businesses worldwide. The successful candidate will provide legal support to CIBC’s Personal Banking business and other areas of the bank as appropriate.

How You’ll Succeed

·       Legal Advice - Providing business-focused legal advice in a dynamic role that includes advice across a range of subject matter areas including consumer protection and banking regulation, marketing and product development.

·       Strategic Regulatory Analysis and Advocacy – Developing a point of view to deliver judgment-based, strategic regulatory interpretation advice as well as forming positions on emerging issues and trends impacting banking generally. 

·     Working collaboratively –  Partnering with lawyers within the Legal Department and with multiple business stakeholders across the Retail Bank and functional groups including Communications, Compliance and Government Relations. When required, oversee and manage the relationship with outside counsel as well.

·         You’re a certified professional.  You must have been called to the Bar in Ontario.

·         You can demonstrate experience in delivering practical, business focused advice on regulatory and legislative interpretation issues at a top tier law firm or in a large in house legal department for at least 4 years and will possess strong analytical, leadership and communication (oral and written) skills. Exposure to litigation is an asset. It’s also an asset if you have experience advising in any of the following areas: consumer protection regulation, financial services or banking legislation, advertising/marketing or lobbying regulation.
