Position Purpose Summary:

The purpose of the Associate Legal Counsel is to directly support The Salvation Army in pursuing its mission by advising on matters of law and policy that affect the ability of The Salvation Army to function as an evangelical branch of the Christian church, which preaches the gospel and attempts to carry out a ministry that expresses practical concern for the needs of humanity.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drafting and reviewing agreements, contracts and a wide range of other legal documentation (e.g. funding agreements, grants, leases, employment contracts, commercial arrangements, termination letters; and MOUs);
  • Providing legal advice and guidance to senior Salvation Army personnel on topics ranging from risk management to legal compliance;
  • Assisting with the resolution of a wide range of legal disputes (including negotiation of settlements and mediations);
  • Working with individual centres, facilities, divisional command offices and departmental offices to identify, analyse and initiate appropriate action on legal issues;
  • Tracking legislation and litigation, assessing future trends and attempting to ensure compliance with new legislation in areas of responsibility;
  • Working with senior administrative officers of The Salvation Army to assist in developing policies and procedures;
  • Assisting in procuring and managing outside legal counsel where required;
  • Representing The Salvation Army in Small Claims Court.

QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications and Education requirements:

Education/Certifications:

  • Must have LL.B or JD from an accredited program and institution;
  • Qualified to practice law in the Province of Ontario;
  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada;

Experience:

  • 4-5 years of working experience as a lawyer;
  • Experience working in-house or in the non-profit sector considered an asset.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Expertise in commercial leasing; procurement; contract review and negotiation, all considered an asset.
  • Highly developed contract drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Adaptive legal skills; capable of responding to a wide range of legal challenges in both a proactive and reactive manner.
  • Excellent ability to analyze complex legal documents and manage risks in keeping with The Salvation Army’s mission and values.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a wide variety of areas of law (commercial, employment, corporate governance, health, and non-profit).

PREFERRED SKILLS/capabilities:

  • Strong organisational, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in a demanding team-oriented environment;
  • Effective organizational and time management skills;
  • Quick and independent learner
