Overview
 
Job Description

Reporting to the Director Legal, Real Estate, the Leasing Law Clerk will:

  • Support the real estate lawyers of Sobeys National Legal Department by providing assistance with legal drafting tasks, document revisions, research, filing, diarization, correspondence and communication with external counsel and internal clients
  • Assist with time management and prioritization of lawyers’ tasks as well as the overall organization and management of files and transaction support 
  • Gather all information necessary (ie from other departments or regions) in order to complete the files and respond to requests from internal clients
  • Draft various types of legal documents including, commercial leases, subleases, assignments, condition waivers, lease summaries, purchase and sale agreements and amendments according to general instructions for review by the lawyer and Real Estate Department clients
  • Document proof reading and editing
  • Manage and assist with various projects within the legal department
  • Coordinate and manage files in connection with transactional work across Canada
  • Working independently on matters with varying complexities related to transactions
  • Exercise initiative and judgment in assisting lawyers with administrative detail on files
  • Process cheque requests and wire transfers
  • Review files to confirm key timelines/deadline dates and updating these timelines and/or deadlines into legal diary systems
  • Track due diligence details and corresponding with consultants and external legal advisors
  • Prepare memorandums to various departments within the business advising of any new or changes to any documents such as service agreements, leases, purchase and sale agreements and processes
  • Research law and Acts in order to update legal precedents and documentation
  • Review files and responding to inquiries that do not require a legal opinion
Job Requirements
  • 7+ years of relevant experience working as a law clerk in a law firm or an in-house environment
  • Graduate from certified Law Clerk program
  • Advanced knowledge of leasing and real estate law and procedures
  • Experience in transactional work in areas of real estate law including commercial leasing and lease administration
  • Experience in drafting commercial leases and other legal agreements
  • Experience using Teraview application for search and registration
  • Experience using ONCORP an asset
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to comprehend legal agreements
  • Excellent interpersonal and client services skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and detail
  • Familiarity with document comparison software (Workshare)
