Job Summary
As a member of the Travelers Canada Claim Legal team, provides legal advice and support
to the Travelers Canada Claim organization with respect to insurance coverage, claim
analysis and resolution, litigation management, and other issues. Individual supports one or
more areas of Claim, including but not limited to Auto Bodily Injury and Physical Damage. The individual will be expected to communicate independently with internal clients on matters of legal strategy and business impact.

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Provides legal advice to claim professionals and managers where applicable law, statutes, regulations and court decisions are unclear or conflicting. Develops and implements cost-effective legal strategies on complex claims and disputes. Determines appropriate action on litigation; provides advice on possible outcomes, awards and settlements. Engages and manages outside counsel as required, ensuring compliance implementation of effective legal strategy and compliance with retention and billing guidelines. Proactively drives optimal resolution of litigation through active strategy formation, management, monitoring, and reporting. Support legal expense management initiatives. Identify, monitor, and provide updates on case law, legislative developments, and legal trends. Provide training as necessary. Collaborates effectively with business as needed to achieve business goals and initiatives. Maintains awareness of judicial climate, current case law decisions, skillful defense techniques and professional expertise through the review of legal publications, seminar/conference attendance. Acts as mentor and coach to less senior attorneys, paralegal/staff; explains issues, ideas and concepts that are incorporated into work assignments. Reviews and approves invoices for retained counsel to ensure appropriate expenses incurred and compliance with corporate retention agreement. May work independently or at the direction of amore senior lawyer within the Claim Legal group depending on the complexity of the matter and issues being addressed.

Strong and persuasive written, oral and presentation skills. Strong PC skills, including WORD and EXCEL. Strong research skills. Strong negotiation skills Effectively uses resources to achieve results. Organized; strong time management; able to multi-task Self-Management: takes responsibility for decisions and actions; successfully handles multiple priorities which may be in conflict. Substantial technical knowledge of legal environment, rules, judiciary, adversaries and expert witnesses. Strong knowledge of Auto business, products and services, including, but not limited to Ontario Auto & Garage policies, common auto endorsements, assessment of auto bodily injury damages and Rules of Civil Procedure, Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule including priority and loss transfer. Clearly relates unit expectations and goals to the business unit mission. Clearly demonstrated sense of urgency and bias for action Ability to work well under pressure independently and as part of a team Ability to forge strong working relationships at senior levels Anticipates clients on-going legal needs. Follows up to ensure clients are satisfied. Effectively articulates legal issues to team members, clients, management and external parties.

Preferred Qualifications
Juris Doctorate / LLB degree required. Called to the Bar for a minimum of 2 years. Member in good standing of at least one provincial Law Society.
