The ideal candidate is a self-motivated individual with at least 5 years of corporate experience (prior in-house, start-up experience an asset). The General Counsel will be responsible for working with all internal departments on the drafting, execution, negotiation and management of contracts related but not limited to IT, real estate, vendor contracts, customer contracts, insurance matters and employee relations. They will be the main point of contact for and work with all external attorneys to manage copyrights and trademarks, and any finance related matters as necessary. The General Counsel will be responsible for ensuring all legal compliance including that which is related but not limited to international expansion, data and privacy laws, including GDPR, labeling, employee safety and consumer protection, consulting with external counsel as needed. They will oversee compliance with corporate governance, establishing the prudence of defending lawsuits and prosecuting. They will be a team player who enjoys a fun working atmosphere! To sparkle in this role, you will: Negotiate, review, draft, advise, and provide legal approval on contracts and documents within each department of the company Provide legal guidance on regulatory matters, including advising all impacted company stakeholders on changes of laws and regulations Establish internal governance policies and regularly monitor compliance Research and evaluate different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations Offer proactive advice on possible legal issues that could or have arose Manage litigation, dispute resolution, and other legal proceedings, including the initiation, conduct and settlement of proceedings with external lawyers Draft, review, advise, and provide legal approval on employment contracts Advise on employment law regulations and issues both in Canada and internationally Coordinate and handle employee disputes Work with external law firms on all corporate legal issues as necessary (i.e. incorporations, trademarks, foreign tax regulations, etc.) Provide legal guidance to ensure the company is complying with data and privacy laws both within Canada and internationally Advise on all area specific labour and business regulations during any international expansion, consulting with external counsel holding the appropriate market knowledge Preserve business records such as minutes of meetings and resolutions when applicable Our bright and shiny candidate will have: JD degree MBA law degree considered a strong asset Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada Proven experience as a legal counsel in business environment or previous experience working in medium to large size corporation At least 5 years of corporate experience Strong business acumen High level of composure with the ability to demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, tact and courtesy, with the ability to manage a demanding practice, work under pressure and maintain strict confidentiality Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills Results-oriented with a commitment to excellence Strong conceptual skills; systems thinking and ability to deal with ambiguity Superior analytical, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills Ability to build effective working relationships with a dynamic, professional team Working with Mejuri = Solid Gold Mejuri aspires to not only inspire and empower our customers, but to build an inspiring, empowering and thoroughly modern workplace.
